How much we can trace

How much of each sector's or country's emissions we can tie to a named owner.

Share of global emissions we can tie to a named owner. Higher means a more complete picture, not less pollution.Number of countries with asset-level emissions data, out of every country tracked.Number of individual emitting sources (power plants, refineries, mines) ingested from Climate TRACE.Date this snapshot was rebuilt from the upstream Climate TRACE feed.
Two different lenses. The Countries table is All greenhouse gases released inside a country's borders, no matter who owns the source. — near-complete. The Companies & producers table is Emissions tied to who runs the asset that year (power plant, refinery). The lens used in the main league table.: we rank entities by the assets they own or operate. Climate TRACE can’t yet tie diffuse sources (cars, homes, most farming) to a named owner, so the company table skews toward sectors with clear ownership.

What we can’t yet trace — and why.

  • Transport (13.8% of global) Cars, ships and trucks are diffuse. No per-owner asset attribution yet.
  • Agriculture (11% of global) Millions of small farms; no single operator we can name.
  • Forestry & Land (9.3% of global) Land-use change spans communal, state and small-holder ownership.
  • Buildings (6% of global) Heating fuel sold to households, not companies.
